A NOTE FROM THE CUSTODIAN

Certain landscapes leave their mark upon those who walk them.

In Miss Brontë's case, the arrangement appears to be mutual.

Witnesses frequently describe her as reserved, distant, and difficult to know.

The moors disagree.

The records of Gondal remain incomplete.

This is not because they were lost.

It is because some territories continue to recognise her authority.
